Student Action Workshops
Second Fridays after school - meet at the gazebo
Students, family, and community are invited to join our monthly workshops right after school where we will write letters to decision makers, draw art for public awareness, and do service projects for our neighbors.
PTA Community Meeting
Third Thursday evenings - see PTA meeting calendar for dates and times
At every community meeting, the Advocacy Committee will be sharing updates and training. We also want to hear from you about what issues are on your mind.
Grown-ups Drop-in
Last Wednesday mornings, 8:30-9:00 - meet at the gazebo
Parents and other grown-ups are invited to join us for coffee (with the Bike Bus crew) and discussion about your concerns and your ideas for solutions. It’s a casual gathering to share our experiences and our hopes for our kids’ world.

About Advocacy at Abernethy Elementary
The PTA raises parent and student voices in Salem and at PPS on issues like school funding and universal school meals. The Advocacy Chair attends community meetings, presents updates, and liaises with the Oregon PTA legislative director and the Portland Association of Teachers building rep. Committee members network other schools and PTAs, education advocates, neighborhood associations, and local civic organizations to stay up to date on what’s happening and where we can be most effective.
